Saint-Mandrier

The French naval base peninsula. Less glamorous than Cannes, more honest and better value.

01

Ashore

The French naval base peninsula, an hour west of Saint-Tropez. Toulon is the working port across the bay — France's Mediterranean fleet has been here since the 17th century. The morning market on Cours Lafayette is the largest in Provence; runs every day except Monday. The Mont Faron funicular goes up 580m for the view across the roadstead.

02

Eat & Drink

L'Eautre Petit Nice on Cours Lafayette for the seafood and the local wine. La Chamade in Toulon (Michelin-starred) for the special evening. La Maison du Cuisinier on rue de la République for the bistronomie. Bandol AOC reds (Domaine Tempier, Château Pradeaux) are the local pairing — Mourvèdre-led, age-worthy.

03

History

Toulon's naval history: Louis XIV's shipyards, Napoleon's first major command at the 1793 siege (he was a 24-year-old artillery captain), the 1942 scuttling when the Vichy fleet sank itself rather than be taken by Germany. The Saint-Mandrier peninsula has been military since the 1820s. The southern half is closed; the northern half is town and beaches.

04

Beaches & Swimming

Plage de la Coudoulière below the peninsula village. Plage de Sainte-Asile for the rocky coves. By boat: Porquerolles (25nm) for the national-park island and Plage Notre Dame; Port-Cros (30nm) for France's first marine reserve — moorings only, an underwater snorkel trail; Les Embiez (10nm), Paul Ricard's private island, marine biology institute and aquarium.

05

Insider

Bandol the town, half an hour east, is the most underrated harbour on the coast — vineyards into the sea, the morning Saturday market, and the wines you can buy at the producer doors. The Sanary-sur-Mer fish market on the harbour at 7am, daily. Cassis (the cliff-town, not the liqueur) is a day-trip; the Calanques are between it and Marseille.

Porquerolles

25nm

Island · National park

The largest of the Îles d'Hyères — pine forests, white sand beaches, no cars. The French cycling through the pines with baguettes is the image.

Anchor at Plage Notre Dame on the east side. The village has one excellent restaurant and reliable provisioning.

Port-Cros

30nm

National park · Marine reserve

France's first marine national park. Anchoring is restricted — mooring buoys only inside the reserve. The clearest water on the French coast.

No anchoring inside the park zone. Mooring buoys bookable in advance. The underwater trail from the shore is worth an afternoon.

Les Embiez

10nm

Private island · Research station

Paul Ricard's island — the pastis magnate bought it in 1958 and built a marina, a marine institute, and a wine estate.

The marine biology institute has a public aquarium. The wine of the island is bottled with the island on the label.

Toulon — Old Quarter

5nm

City · Market · Navy

The real Provence that the Côte d'Azur brochures miss: the morning market on the Cours Lafayette, the opera house, the navy museum.

The covered market sells Provençal cheeses, cured meats, and fresh fish from the local boats. The cheese vendor in the left nave.

The Mistral channels hard through the Toulon roads — exposed position. Once out into the Îles d'Hyères, excellent shelter. The inner bay is calm in most conditions. Best months: June and September.
